50 CFB Questions Ahead of 2024 Season (Part I)

At the time of this publishing (July 24) there is only ONE month left until the brand-new CFB season. Time to break down some burning questions I have about the top 50 teams (according to cbssports.com)

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the first of a four-part series.

1. Michigan: Dynasty or Dead Men Walking?

Will Michigan be competitive in 2024 after all of the departures, or will they be reminiscent of 2020 LSU?

2. Washington: From DeBoer next door to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood

How will this offense look without DeBoer, Grubb, Penix, Odunze, and Polk? Washington hit gold in the transfer portal by bringing in Will Rogers. Will he be able to duplicate his predecessor’s success?

3. Texas: Are they “back” for real this time?

Texas had its best year last year since Colt McCoy was under center. Will the success continue or will the move to the SEC have us singing the same tune as the last decade?

4. Alabama: To DeBoer the Burden?

What will Alabama look like in the post-Saban era? Will the defense match the offense? Will the fans give KDB time? How long will it take to see a game and get used to not seeing the GOAT on the sideline?

5. Georgia: Carson Beck QB1?

Now that Saban has hung up the straw hat, Kirby Smart is clearly the best coach—not only in the conference but the country. Will Carson Beck solidify himself as the QB1 in this year’s draft class or will someone else take that spot?

6. Florida State: ACC-epting another offer?

Will this be the last year we see FSU in the ACC? With conference realignment looming (more so than ever before) FSU has to be a team to watch make a move to a more favorable CFP conference. The BIG10 and SEC are the clear options.

7. Oregon: Ducks in a Row?

Oregon has been the west coast constant for the better part of the last six years now. Can they continue their streak of double digit win seasons and power through to the playoff while navigating a new BIG10 schedule?

8. Missouri: Crouching Tigers, Hidden Contenders?

Missouri stunned the world last year making and winning a NY6 bowl. Can they take the next step and challenge for SEC supremacy and a playoff spot?

9. Ohio State: Last Day(s) in Columbus?

If not now, when for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes? They have had lofty expectations for the last six years only to fall short. With the talent remaining on this roster with playmakers like Emeka Egbuka and new additions like Caleb Downs and Julian Sayin, anything less than a CFP trophy is a failure that could cause OSU to look elsewhere for a coach. (It’s a hot take. I know).

10. Ole Miss: Transfer of Power in the SEC?

Nobody had a better offseason than Ole Miss. They cleaned house in the transfer portal, (Don’t tell Dabo), found out they don’t have to play Alabama, and watched Lane Kiffin’s white whale ride off into retirement. With a favorable schedule and a loaded roster, could this be the year Ole Miss shatters the glass ceiling?

11. Arizona: Desert Duo Anonymous

Why is no one talking about the duo of Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan? I will go out and call them the best QB-WR combo in America and look for them to carry this Arizona team to at least nine wins in the new Big 12 where defense is still optional.

That’s all for now. Catch the next edition, Part II: Questions 12 – 28, later this week.
