I wrote an article last year that I am fairly proud of about that fall-like snap of weather you get toward the end of summer and how it was a promising sign of things to come.
For those of us in the South, it’s a reminder that the hellish heat and humidity won’t last forever. It’s also a sign that football season is coming, which takes precedence over certain holidays.
I’m standing in my backyard during such a snap, and the signs of summer fading are becoming evident. It’s cooler and the humidity is way down. Some of the leaves in our trees are turning yellow and falling.
Yeah, it’s Gameday weather. Tailgate season. College has already started, NFL kicks off this Sunday.
But fall isn’t just about the pigskin. Baseball is at its best this time of year.
There’s something special about playoff baseball. The air is cooler, the shadows longer, the stakes higher.
The stark difference between the boys of summer battling the impending winter gives a sense of urgency, similar to playing sandlot baseball in the time between the streetlights coming on and being called to come home. You know the long days are ending and winter is coming, but baseball gives us one shred of summer to hold on to before it, too, fades like August. I love it.

The general consensus is that Labor Day end summer; most everyone is back at school and pools and summer hangout spots begin to close and/or transition to offseason activities. And I suppose that’s true. The heat may hang around, but everyone knows cooler weather is coming.
And for those of us down here, this snap may not last, but it’s cause to celebrate.
