Tuesday Mailbag, 9.10.24

In an effort to show our appreciation for supporting us the last five years, we’ve decided to start The Message Pitch Mailbag to connect with our listeners/readers.

The premise is simple: You ask, we answer. Interested? Shoot us an email at info@themessagepitch.com with the subject line “Mailbag Question.”

Here’s what you wanted to know this week:

“Do we think Thorne finishes the season at auburn? I don’t mean as the starter because that’s obvious, I mean at the school.”

Lost in Lee County

DREW: Woof. You hate to pick on a college kid, but well, now that they’re getting paid it’s just business. I think Thorne has to have the five game stretch of his life to stay the starter. That is, if I was coach. I don’t know if it says more about Hugh Freeze, Payton Thorne, or the quarterback room at Auburn that he wasn’t pulled after the third interception thrown to the Cal defense Saturday. The Tigers still had a chance with less than a minute left before Thorn threw his fourth pick of the game. I also didn’t understand why Freeze consistently bailed on the run despite getting four and five yards a carry per drive. So in short, I think Freeze is going to ride with Thorne until the wheels fall off.

But brother, they sure look wobbly. I don’t think he leaves before the season’s end—but will as quickly as he can after.

”if Auburn and FSU met in a bowl game, how many passing yards combined would DJU and Peyton Thorne throw for?”

-Jerry

DREW: Put it to you this way, it would look like the ghost of Bad Bo Wallace had descended on the field.

“Notre Dame playoff chances after NIU?”

-Irish Dame

DREW: Well, it’s Notre Dame, so still not zero. I think they can lose one more game and the AP poll will still have them in the thick of it. In all seriousness, if they win out from here, they’ll be in the conversation. Just watch.
