Tuesday Mailbag, 9.17.24

In an effort to show our appreciation for supporting us the last five years, we’ve decided to start The Message Pitch Mailbag to connect with our listeners/readers.

The premise is simple: You ask, we answer. Interested? Shoot us an email at info@themessagepitch.com with the subject line “Mailbag Question.”

Here’s what you wanted to know this week:

“So what’s next for the Phins? So depressed after Tua went down.”

– Missing Marino in South Beach

WILL: They’ll ride it out with Skylar Thompson until Tua gets cleared and hopefully starts wearing a guardian cap. They’ve got the Seahawks, Titans, Pats and Colts up on the schedule, and a bye week thrown in there. Huntley is a solid enough backup that they feel comfortable not making a panic signing or trade.

“Does Norvell make it the whole season or does he get Jimboed?”

-Gary

DREW: I’d say he does make it because of one thing: that massive buyout stemming from his extension last year. FSU is a great school with a passionate fan and alumni base, but the reason A&M got away with booting Jimbo as soon after his extension as they did is because they got that money, son. Oodles of it. And can afford to burn a coach or two if they want. FSU doesn’t, and so unless it becomes an absolute catastrophe—and stay tuned—he’s there through the season, if not longer.

“How bad is Florida? Does Napier make it through the season?”

-Dave

DREW: Short answer Dave? Very and No. Long answer? They’re bad, and it’s not all on Billy Napier, but he’s going to take the hit for it. That program was headed for shambles when he took over, no one realized how bad, and so this rebuilding process is a lot bigger than first thought. That said, Napier has to put a winner out on the field, and not only are there not signs of improvement, the team appears to have gotten worse. It’s so bad, UF is listing the spring scrimmage as a win on their schedule. Depending on how bad his October goes (UCF, at Tennessee, Kentucky, then Georgia) he may be gone by Halloween. If only he had a major buyout.
