We made it to Super Bowl week, folks. Forgive me if you find any typos in this article as nerves begin setting in and I shake in anticipation. My Eagles find themselves in the big game again. They take on their old coach and friend Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs. Everything about this game has the makings of an instant classic and there is no shortage of storylines. Here are some of my thoughts as we prepare for Super Bowl Sunday.
– I get the hype with Joe Burrow. Guys want to be like him. Girls want to be with him. He has swagger but Jalen Hurts is cool in his own regard. After the NFC Championship, a photo went viral of Hurts scrolling through his phone wearing his championship hat and sunglasses puffing a cigar at his locker. He expected to get to this very moment. His actions back up his words and his words are John Wooden-esque. Here are a few quotes that are Hurts originals from this season:
“The rent is due everyday”
“When the phone rings, answer.”
“We cannot just feel the temperature in the room. We must be the thermometer.”
When asked about what his best play was this year Hurts responded with, “The season is not over.”
The guy is a less animated Brian Dawkins and a perfect fit for Philadelphia. I’m not ready to say he’s as good as Mahomes, Burrow, Allen or even Lamar Jackson but there is no better leader in the league.
– The thing about this game is I really want to hate the Chiefs…but I can’t. Patrick Mahomes is exciting to watch and is becoming Peyton Manning with all his commercials. I prefer his acting to Aaron Rodgers. Andy Reid even has appeared in one of his State Farm commercials. I am of the Eagles fans that appreciates what Reid has done for the Eagles franchise. Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, and Jason Kelce were drafted by him. He helped develop Howie Roseman into the best GM in the league. His coaching tree is far more successful than Belichicks. This Super Bowl would be more fun if I hated the team we were playing like in 2018 against the Patriots. I need the Andy Reid who lost three consecutive NFC Championships to show up this Sunday, but the truth is it won’t sting as bad losing to this group. We’ll see if my tune changes.
– The overplayed storyline you may have already heard is the Kelce brothers facing off against each other. What’s cool about them is they are very close and supportive of each other. The two host their own podcast, which is worth a listen. I think they have a future in broadcasting if they want to take that route after their playing careers are over. Until that day comes, these guys are still the best at their position. Travis Kelce set a receiving record in the Divisional round and Jason Kelce at 35 is still pushing lineman twice his size around and getting downfield to block.
– I am hoping for a shootout in this game but don’t be surprised if this is a 23-20 game in the 4th, especially if the Eagles are able to run the ball and burn clock. The Chiefs have some injuries outside of Mahomes but he will keep them in this game. The KC defense is not the best but they do have playmakers who will capitalize on mistakes. I will save my unbiased prediction for our second part of our Super Bowl Preview. Be sure to catch Part One where we reviewed the best Super Bowl commercials from past years.
